State Rep. Juan Garcia (D-Corpus Christi), who was just defeated in his re-election bid to the Texas House of Representatives, is rumored to be under consideration as a possible Secretary of the Navy in Barack Obama’s administration.
Garcia joins longtime labor leader Linda Chavez Thompson and Texas Congressman Chet Edwards (D-Waco) as Texans contending for cabinet posts in the new administration. Edwards, however, has already decided to stay in Congress.
Garcia is a friend of Obama’s from their Harvard Law School days, and was chair of Obama’s campaign in Texas. Garcia, in addition to his naval service, has been a White House Fellow and previously served as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Education.
