Vouchers Keep Cropping Up

While it gets little more than a scant mention in a Corpus Christi Caller-Times story on a townhall meeting held by State Rep. Solomon Ortiz, Jr. (D-Corpus Christi), here is some verification that the pro-voucher folks are at it again–this time taking their complaints to the grassroots level:
Corpus Christi resident Chuck Burnett asked Ortiz to consider changing his mind on educational vouchers that would benefit taxpayers wanting to send their children to private schools. Burnett, who lives near Holly Road and Staples Street, said he pays thousands of dollars to send his three children to private schools because he is disappointed with the state of the public school system.
Ortiz said he is against the idea because it would take taxpayer money to do so.
Here’s an idea for Mr. Burnett: if you don’t like what is happening at your neighborhood school, why not go down and volunteer to help out? Or, better yet, quit complaining about your property taxes and realize that money is what our school system needs to get better.

Hey, Vince. I’m not only a new member to your blog but a Texas special educator (public school) who just happens to specialize in working with children with ASD and their families. The next comment may blow your mind. Despite the reluctance from the majority of public educators, I couldn’t be a more ardent supporter of a voucher program. Yepper…even though my salary – at this point – depends upon my work in public schools with these special needs youngsters. Furthermore, not only do I believe vouchers are the ANSWER to education but I believe it should be considered for ALL students. Period.
Unbelievable coming from someone in the trenches, eh? Oh well…thanks for letting me join in. I reallllllllllly look forward to being involved in the engaging discussions.
God speed…
