In spite of the fact that the U.S. Department of Interior has rescinded a decades-old rule prohibiting the carrying of loaded firearms in national parks, Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson hasn’t changed his mind about transferring the Christmas Mountains to federal control.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Patterson will re-evaluate the situation after Barack Obama takes office as Texas’ 44th President. Patterson, a Republican, is a strong Second Amendment advocate.
“I said, ‘No guns, no hunting, no deal,’?” Patterson told the Star-Telegram. “Now we have the Department of Interior doing the right thing. The question remains: Will the president leave that in place?
“Before we make any moves on this positive development, we’re going to have to see how that plays out.”
For some reason, I think the Obama administration will have a few more pressing tasks upon taking office other than reinstating this rule. I suspect drilling and natural resource use in parks will be more of a top priority for the Department of the Interior. I could be wrong, so we’ll see.
