Sources Deny Rumor That Van De Putte Will Resign Take Job In Obama Administration

Sources close to State Sen. Leticia Van De Putte (D-San Antonio) are this afternoon denying rumors that the senator’s resignation is eminent and that she plans to step down for a non-cabinet post in the administration of President Elect Barack Obama.

Two separate sources denied the rumor around 1:30 Friday.

The rumor, which has been circulating for a couple of days, indicates that State Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin) has enough votes to replace Van De Putte as Minority Leader should she resign.

If Van De Putte does resign, several possible replacements include State Reps. Trey Martinez-Fisher, Joaquin Castro, and State Rep. Mike Villareal. A special election, likely in the middle of the 2009 legislative session, would have to be held to facilitate a replacement. Of course, if she does resign, Texas Governor Rick Perry will push the election date as far back as possible to deny Democrats a much needed 12th (or 13th, if Chris Bell wins his special election in SD 17) vote in that chamber.
