United Auto Workers Will “Chase” Caterpillar Jobs To Texas

Published on December 21, 2008 with No Comments

Following the announcement that Caterpillar, Inc. is moving its main assembly and paint facilities to Texas thanks to some largess from Texas Governor Rick Perry’s Texas Enterprise Fund, officials with the United Auto Workers say they will “chase” the jobs to Texas and unionize Caterpillar’s eventual operations here.

To my knowledge, this is the first project of the Texas Enterprise Fund–the governor’s economic development slush fund–that is actually facilitating the move of a unionized plant from another state to Texas, which is a “right to work” state and has some notoriously anti-union sentiments and laws on the books. The Enterprise Fund is contributing $10 million to Caterpillar’s move.

The really interesting part is that the Union says they’ll chase the jobs to Texas (which, I am sure, will make Governor Perry very happy):

Caterpillar’s announcement that 814 Mossville engine plant employees are going to be indefinitely laid off came as no surprise to the UAW.

Local 974 President Rick Doty said today that the company had warned in June they were getting out of the on–highway truck engine business.

What angers the Local President is the announcement of a new CAT engine plant to be constructed in Texas…

“Don’t kid yourself—–and Caterpillar might as well be put on notice right now. We will chase these jobs to Texas. We will start an organizing campaign in Texas to organize these jobs that belong to be represented by the UAW,” said Doty.

Doty says the union hasn’t been given any information about what CAT might do with the space now occupied by diesel engine assembly in Mossville.

I think it is a good thing that UAW is going to chase the jobs. One of the carrots for businesses to move to Texas is, of course, low wages. Another is that this is a “right to work” state with notoriously anti-union sentiments. Texans don’t need jobs to come to Texas just so employers can pay Texans a lower wage than they were paying workers under a collective bargaining agreement in another state–all with the assistance of $10 million in taxpayer money.
