Will Smithee Be 13th Warrior In Speaker’s Race?

Will State Rep. John Smithee (R-Amarillo) be the 13th Warrior in the race for Speaker of the Texas House in January? Only time will tell, but Smithee told Austin-based Quorum Report today that he would make an announcement within the next 48 hours.
According to QR, Smithee, who hasn’t actively sought the position thus far, has lately received calls from “more than twenty colleagues” inquiring about whether or not he may enter the fray.
Does this mean that Smithee is the “consensus” candidate that everyone has been waiting for? It’s doubtful.
Although Smithee has held office since 1985, sources tell Capitol Annex that many House members are still holding out for a different potential”consensus candidate”–State Rep. Joe Strauss (R-San Antonio) to enter the race.
