Granger Reconsidering Run For Hutchison’s Senate Seat

Congresswoman Kay Granger is reconsidering a bid for the U.S. Senate seat Kay Bailey Hutchison is expected to vacate to run for governor in 2010.
Granger (R-Fort Worth), had been making noise about a senate run much of last year. When she decided against another term as Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference, it appeared she was positioning herself for that eventuality.
Although she would have been one of a small handful of frontrunners in a race that could attract as many as 20 prominent Texas Republicans, she’s backing down from running now thanks to being named as the ranking Republican on the State-Foreign Operations and Related Programs Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee.

Interviewed in Austin over the weekend, Granger told PoliTex that she hasn’t closed the door on a Senate bid but is now “less apt to run” after being selected as ranking member on the State-Foreign Operations subcommittee. The Fort Worth Republican said that she is “still looking” at the Senate race and hasn’t “said no” but acknowledged that her new duties give her plenty of incentive to stay in the House.
