Bill Would Move Property Tax Appraisal Debate Online

A Senate Bill filed jointly by several Republicans in the Texas Senate would require appraisal districts in Texas to implement systems allowing property owners to file notices of protest online.

The bill, SB 873, property owners would find it much easier to protest their assessed property values. Under current law, such protests must be made in writing to an appraisal district.

Although local appraisal districts and their lobbyists may protest the bill, claiming it will flood their offices with protests, such legislation is probably the right move because it makes another government service accessible to members of the public online.
