Will Texas Have A Beer Pong Bill? (Take The Poll!)

We at Capitol Annex are always on the lookout for trends in state-level legislation across the nation since Texas typically manages to get ahead of the trend on stupid and bizarre legislation and behind the trend on substantive public policy.

Thus, we were quite shocked that Maryland, and not Texas, was the first out with a bill to regulate a popular drinking game known as Beer Pong. Maryland’s SB 233 [.pdf] would have regulated the game of beer pong in the city of Baltimore.

The legislation met an untimely demise, however, because there are evidently lots of beer pong players in Maryland who didn’t think this was good public policy (or, at least that’s what they said before passing out on a barroom floor with a mild case of alcohol poisoning). Lowering the Bar has more (and explains what “Beer Pong” is for those [like us] who had heard of it but weren’t for sure].

At any rate, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for any such legislation here in Texas. We’d almost like to see such a bill get to the House Floor just to hear Warren Chisum (or Debbie Riddle, or whomever) trying to explain to someone at the back mic what “beer pong” is and why it should be regulated.

Which member of the Texas House or Senate do you think would be the most likely to carry a bill to regulate "beer pong" if one were filed in Texas?

  • State Rep. Ellen Cohen (D-Houston), because it is possible to play Beer Pong in a strip club, and therefore it must be subject to taxes and fees. (50.0%, 3 Votes)
  • State Rep. Debbie Riddle, because she'll regulate anything. (17.0%, 1 Votes)
  • State Rep. Warren Chisum (R-Pampa), because nothing fun or involving sex is ever immune from a bill by the Gentleman from Pampa. (17.0%, 1 Votes)
  • State Sen. Dan Patrick (R-Houston), because Beer Pong is not in the Bible. (17.0%, 1 Votes)
  • State Sen. Florence Shapiro (R-Plano), because she needs to raise her profile for that run for U.S. Senate and this is a great way to do it. (0.0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 6
