Bill Would Require Excused Absences For Voting

Published on March 09, 2009 with No Comments

A bill by State Sen. Leticia Van De Putte (D-San Antonio) would require that students who must leave school to vote be given excused absences.

The bill, SB 1400, is a good piece of legislation–especially if Rep. Hubert Vo’s bill to lower the voting age to 17 in certain instances passes. I’ve not heard of schools refusing to grant excused absences for voting, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear it has happened.

Van De Putte’s bill gives protections to students for voting in national, state, and local elections.
