A bill by State Rep. Norma Chavez (D-El Paso) would require certain government entities in Texas to publish required notices in Spanish-language newspapers.
The bill, HB 4074, would require political subdivisions including municipalities and school districts which have to publish certain notices in newspapers of general circulation to also publish those notices in Spanish-language newspapers if any portion of the political subdivision is located in a county in which more than 50 percent of the population is Hispanic.
Any county with a Hispanic population of greater than 50 percent would be required to do the same.
In both cases, the requirement would only stand if a Spanish-language newspaper exists in the political subdivisions in question.
