Vice President Joe Biden To Drag The Sack Through Texas

It will be the first time for a Democratic Vice President to visit Texas since–well, we’re not sure–when VP Joe Biden makes a swing through Austin next week.
So, what’s planned? A parade? An outdoor rally? A speech at a venue where people could actually get in and see the number two leader of the Democratic Party? Nope. Biden is coming to Texas to “drag the sack.” In other words: Biden is swinging through to collect some checks from high-dollar donors and then fly on to a state that matters to Democrats.
Via the Statesman:
It’s an official secret for now, but I’m told by Central Texas Democrats that Vice President Biden is expected in Austin a week from today to headline a private fund-raiser being pulled together by the Democratic National Committee, the entity that absorbed President Obama’s presidential campaign committee when Obama entered the White House.
The latest plan is for Biden to attend a fundraising luncheon in the home of Obama donors and, before or after, swing by the East Austin headquarters of Lance Armstrong’s Live Strong Foundation. (It could be the mix of official business—meaning a foundation visit or something of the like—and politics enables Biden to fly to Austin on Air Force Two, his government-assigned plane.)
The only possibility for a public event is an address to the Texas Legislature:
I’ve also heard Democratic speculation about Biden addressing a joint session of the Republican-majority House and Senate—potentially a fine spectacle presuming Biden attempts a spirited defense of the federal stimulus package that’s been chewed upon by lawmakers and GOP Gov. Rick Perry.
But aides to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio, didn’t immediately confirm any invitation to Biden.
That’s nice and all, but one would think that the DNC realizes that it won’t ever carry Texas in a national election without actually making an effort. And, that means more than sending Biden down to drag the sack. Why not let Biden actually do a public event that isn’t inside the capitol or a fundraiser? How hard is that? Or, maybe a town hall meeting? Visiting a factory? A school? Something other than Cheryl Crow’s ex’s foundation and a private fundraiser, please.
I guess the “change we can believe in” only applies to the government and not how campaigns and the party are run when it comes to “red” states.
