Hank Gilbert (D-Whitehouse), the Democratic Party’s 2006 nominee for Agriculture Commissioner who has spent the last four years traveling across Texas fighting against toll roads and other bad GOP policies has announced that he will run for Governor in 2010.
Gilbert’s entrance into the race essentially makes him the immediate frontrunner. In spite of the fact that former Ambassador Tom Schieffer has support from some institutional Democrats, Gilbert has much higher name identification and far more grassroots support from Democrats and independents across the state.
As for Kinky Friedman, he’ll be a non-entity in the race. With such a crowded primary, Friedman will be lucky to pull 2-3 percent of the vote.
