14th Court of Appeals Justice Jeff Brown announced this week that he would enter the race to replace retiring Texas Supreme Court Justice Harriet O’Neill. O’Neill’s seat, Place Three, had previously attracted the attention of Fourth Court of Appeals justice Rebecca Simmons, who announced her candidacy last month.
From Brown’s press release:
Justice Brown was appointed to the Fourteenth Court of Appeals in December 2007 and subsequently elected in 2008. He was rated (with one other Justice) the most outstanding Court of Appeals judge on the most recent Houston Bar Association bar poll, after just a year on the appellate bench. Prior to serving on the Court of Appeals, he was appointed District Judge of the 55th District Court of Harris County and subsequently was elected in 2002 and reelected in 2006. Before joining the 55th District Court, Justice Brown worked as an associate for five years in the trial department of Baker Botts.
Justice Brown is a graduate of the University of Houston Law Center where he was the chief
note and comment editor of the law review. He served as a briefing attorney for former Texas
Supreme Court Justices Greg Abbott and Jack Hightower.
No doubt the fact that his campaign treasurer is General Counsel for CenterPoint will make him a good target for a Democrat this fall–if he wins the primary. Given the nasty nature of high court primaries in recent years, this could be an interesting race to watch.
