TDP Chairman Calls Out Teabaggers

In some of the most forceful language we’ve seen from a state party chair in a while, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie today called the notorious “teabaggers” exactly what most people think they are: fools. The comments came as the Democratic National Committee opened its fall three-day meeting in Austin.

Via the Dallas Morning News’ Trailblazers blog:

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie told national Democrats on Thursday that anti-tax tea party participants and those who question President Obama’s citizenship are “fools” that get too much media attention. Richie said the president’s critics are riding a tidal wave of anti-government sentiment. He said fielding strong candidates and winning local and statewide elections next November is the best way to silence the president’s most outspoken critics.

“We will no longer have these fools who call themselves teabaggers and birthers and others out there garnering the press,” he said. “Instead, we will have people saying, our government does work for me.”

Very strong words, no doubt. And, I’m sure we can expect some finger wagging from the GOP. Nevertheless, before they do much finger wagging, they should probably run a Lexis search of stuff some of their party leadership has said.

It is good to see a state party chair being aggressive like this. Now, we just need to make sure that rank and file Democrats don’t buy into however the GOP may try to spin this.

  1. Uhm…these people don’t call themselves “teabaggers and birthers.” Those are OUR nicknames for them. While there were a few at first who used the term “teabagging,” I don’t think any of them use it now. But all the same, these are the dopes who insist on calling us the “Democrat Party” at every turn, so I suppose there’s nothing wrong with us having a little fun with them.

Secondly, if you parse through what Richie says, it was obviously just empty hogwash. Yes, fielding strong candidates and winning is an admirable goal, but it’s not a strategy of any sort. Nor is it anything particularly mentionable, as that’s the same goal that every political party has ever had anywhere. Nor is calling our opponents “fools” likely to achieve any real purpose, beyond making some Democrats feel better. I sure hope he said more than just this, or he just wasted everyone’s time. Strong words are meaningless unless they’re part of a bigger strategy. Insulting Republicans isn’t a strategy.

  2. Off-Topic, but I just wanted to mention that this blog was awarded the Honest Weblog Award by yours truly, for excellence in blogging.

But to be perfectly honest, I only picked this blog because I needed to pick someone and liked that I’m high up on your blogroll, as well as that you’re an Austin blog. And really, that’s about as excellent as anything.
