The Phil Gramm Show: Obama Lets Loose On Former Texas Senator

Via Texans on the Potomac, the Phil Gramm Show continues, to our amusement, with Obama letting loose on Phil Gramm, the man who would be McCain’s Secretary of the Treasury:

“The Enron Loophole was created by McCain campaign co-chair Phil Gramm at the behest of Enron–just one example of the special interest politics that put the interests of Big Oil and speculators ahead of the interests of working people,” said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton. “And the American people have seen the results: record corporate profits while Americans pay record prices at the pump.”

This comes after the Chron published this article, which of course is based off a Mother Jones article from almost a month ago.

God Save Us From Phil Gramm

UPDATE: Gramm has called the media all the way from Turkey to try and polish his tarnished reputation. More via PoliTex.

There are some very scary rumors out there that former U.S. Senator Phil Gramm (a one-time presidential also ran) will be Secretary of the Treasury if we are unfortunate enough to see John McCain elected as president. Via PoliTex:

Former Sen. Phil Gramm and former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, were power brokers for years. Now, the like-minded conservatives — each with a Ph.D. in economics — are working on John McCain’s presidential bid. Gramm has an official role, Armey does speaking, but they keep tabs on each other. Like the recent speculation about Gramm slated to be treasury secretary (a recurring rumor since Gramm retired in 2002) in a McCain Administration.

“That’s what I’m hoping,” said Armey, who was on Capitol Hill today, “and expecting that to be the case.”

Doesn’t this just make you feel all slimy? Senator Dead Pheasant as Secretary of the Treasury? Of course, his close ties to Enron and the fact that he greased the way to the meltdown in the housing sector will no doubt knock any confirmation hearings off the tracks.

Will Obama Use Texas Only As An ATM?

Perry at Brains and Eggs brings points us to a disturbing tidbit from the Chron:

Robert Gibbs, Obama’s communications director who spoke to reporters at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast Thursday, indicated that the candidate, who has not visited Texas since before the March 4 primary, will be back.

“We’ll be down there a lot,” Gibbs said. But don’t expect lots of those big, noisy rallies like the candidate held during the primary season. More likely the drop-ins will consist of discrete private fund-raisers.

McCain Campaign Cancels Fundraiser With Clayton Williams (Have They Heard Of Wikipedia?)

John McCain has canceled a fundraiser with Clayton “Relax And Enjoy It” Williams, the former governor of Texas.

Williams, of course, is infamous for comparing rape to a fog:

The Texan, Republican Clayton “Claytie” Williams, made the joke during his failed 1990 campaign for governor against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, “As long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.” He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would “head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt.”

An Open Letter To Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

[I'd been planning to do something like this for several days, but never could quite come up with the right words. Bradley over at North Texas Liberal did, and I follow suit today.--VL]

Dear Senator Clinton:

Last night, I got an email from your campaign telling me you would endorse Senator Obama on Saturday in Washington. When I saw that the subject of the email was “I want you to know,” I didn’t even need to read it to know what it was about. I knew that the end was here.

It is difficult to put into words how I feel about your campaign and what you stand for.

On primary election eve, I drove to every polling place in my county and put out your signs. A slight sleet was falling, it was freezing cold (a rarity in Texas in March) and I got lost trying to find one of the far-flung polling places, but I did it because I wanted people in my county to know when they arrived at their polling place that if they were voting for you, they were not alone. You carried my county.

On “caucus night,” I conducted my precinct caucus. We had to keep adding more chairs to the room. Friends and neighbors who I did not even know were Democrats came out to support you. I’ll never forget the elderly woman who came up to me after the caucus and thanked me for “helping,” and telling me she never thought she would live to vote for a woman for president. To her, your campaign meant everything.

Often in your campaign, you said that we are “not invisible to you.” Every day, I see people who seem largely “invisible” in America. The man on the street begging for change; the single parent working two jobs just to be able to feed her children–sans insurance, of course; the high schoolers for whom a college education is financially out of reach.   We see these people, but when it comes to helping them on a large scale, our country somehow falls woefully short.

In you, I saw a better nation for myself and the millions of “invisible” Americans. I truly believe that you would have helped our nation live up to its fullest potential. With you, “hope” was not just a slogan, but something we could see on the horizon.

Your campaign was about making the impossible possible. Healthcare for every American, “green” jobs, improvements in education our nation has not seen in the last eight years.

I was never more proud to cast a vote for President than I was to cast my vote for you. What you have done for our party–and for America–deserves more of a “thank you” than I can give.

Sadly, for you and many of your supporters, seeing you in the White House is now a dream deferred.

As much as I would have liked to see you continue your fight in the trenches for the 18 million men and women who voted for you, the action you now take is the one that is in the best interest of all Democrats. It takes great courage and convictions to do what you are doing. It is that courage and those convictions that I admire the most.

 I look ahead to all the plans that we made
And the dreams that we had
I’m in a world that tries to take them away
Oh, but I’m taking them back
All this time I’ve just been to blind to understand
What should matter to me
My friend, this life we live
Is not what we have, it’s what we believe.

Clinton Tells Supporters In Email She Will Endorse Obama On Saturday

In an email to supporters tonight, Senator Hillary Clinton announced that she will endorse Sen. Barack Obama on Saturday in Washington, D.C.:

I wanted you to be one of the first to know: on Saturday, I will hold an event in Washington D.C. to thank everyone who has supported my campaign. Over the course of the last 16 months, I have been privileged and touched to witness the incredible dedication and sacrifice of so many people working for our campaign. Every minute you put into helping us win, every dollar you gave to keep up the fight meant more to me than I can ever possibly tell you.

On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy. This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans.

I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party’s nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise.

Saying, “[t]he stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise,” Clinton indicated she would speak about how her supporters can rally around Obama.
