Cover Of DeLay Book Sparked Fight Among Editors

January 15, 2007 by Vince Leibowitz · 1 Comment

According to the New York Post, the cover of “No Retreat, No Surrender,” Tom DeLay’s new book due out March 20, created quite a furor among editors at Penguin’s Sentinel Publishing.

The fight over the indicted former Sugar Land Congressman and House Majority Leader’s Book Cover? It was over a decision between having DeLay alongside a flag and a cross versus a smiling DeLay against a black backdrop.

The cross and flag lost out.

Mass Resignations In Shelley Sekula-Gibbs Office?

November 14, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment

Rumors have been flying fast and furious that Shelley Sekula-Gibbs (R-Clear Lake) staff walked out on her today.

However, that’s not the whole story. It turns out that the staff of former Rep. Tom DeLay resigned en masse after a series of confrontations with Sekula-Gibbs.
Of course, Sekula-Gibbs staff, such that it is, refused to discuss this with Raw Story, who was also hot on the tail of the story:

Tom DeLay: Selling Off The Furniture

November 14, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment

My, my, my. Having Dick Deguerin represent you (not to mention at least four or five other law firms) must be pretty expensive.

Why? Because Tom DeLay’s been selling off office furniture. According to the FEC documents, several individuals have bought office furniture previously owned by the DeLay campaign and it. [Via Talking Points Memo]

CD 22:’Voter Intent’ Cannot Be Determined By A Poll

October 30, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · 2 Comments

Everyone from Pasadena to Clear Lake seems to have their panties in a major twist about the latest Houston Chronicle-11 News poll in Congressional District 22.

Call me an eternal optomist, but that poll doesn’t really scare me that much.

Dick Cheney To Stump For Shelley

September 28, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · 2 Comments

Have you ever noticed that Republicans aren’t good at math? Or at keeping promises?

Earlier this year, they were going to give Shelley Sekula-Gibbs $3 million bucks to defeat Nick Lampson.

They threw her a hundred grand with a side of Dick Cheney. They’re missing a lot of zeros on that check. And, unless they’re hiding in Cheney’s arteries along with some mean cholesterol, I doubt they’ll be forthcoming.

She May Lead, But Will People Bother To Write Her In?

September 7, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · 1 Comment

The Rosenberg Herald-Coster notes that Shelley Sekula-Gibbs says she is the “leader” of the CD-22 race by more than ten percentage points.

Of course, those numbers came from a smearing, smarmy push poll. And, just because she’s leading in her own poll doesn’t mean people are going to bother to write her in. They’ll say one thing during a phone survey, but no doubt perhaps do something a bit differently when they are forced to spend five minutes trying to write her name in on Election Day.

Tom DeLay Just Won’t Go Away

September 7, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment

We may not have Tom DeLay to kick around as a member of Congress anymore, but his wife has been taking a beating in the press the past couple of days.

It seems she, too, may be the target of an investigation to determine if a nice salary she got from a lobby group was actually paid for any work or just given as some sort of “Majority Leader’s Wife Honorarium.”

Fort Bend County’s Muse has some delicious rumors about the situation.

The Zoo In 22

September 2, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment

The special election scheduled for election day has gone from a political power play by Rick Perry to an irrevelancy to a joke—all within less than five days.

Now there are five—count ‘em—five candidates in the special election, with all of the contenders hoping to hold the seat for a mere two months:

Shelley Sekula-Gibbs (R-Houston), the Anointed Write-In
Don Richardson (R-Houston), the “other” write-in
Bob Smither (L-Friendswood)
Also, former Congressman Steve Stockman (R-Friendswood), who tried to be an independent candidate in the general—before DeLay’s untimely departure—but was unable to get the signatures together.

Then, the total unknown: Ginnibecego Hoa Tran (R-Houston). No clue about who Mr. Tran is.

Lampson, realizing the special election is an idiotic power play by Perry to give some Republican the advantage, isn’t running.

Rumor has it, however, that Pat Baig was going to file. Baig, as you’ll recall, ran in the primary.

Lampson Won’t Run In Special Election

August 31, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment

This just in: Nick Lampson won’t run in the special election Perry has set to fill DeLay’s seat—which will be held on election day and will result in someone holding the seat for a grand total of two months (if that):

“I have decided against running in the special election,” Lampson said.  “This entire process has become a mess thanks to Tom DeLay’s attempts to manipulate the system.  If the Governor and Tom DeLay had truly been concerned about the interest of Southeast Texans, we would have had this special election back in May.  Now we are looking at four special election candidates if I were to run and possibly more by close of business tomorrow.  That raises the possibility of run-off that would drag the process into December.  Enough is enough.  I am not going to put voters through that extra confusion.  I am going to focus my attention on the general election and the next full term of Congress.  Vote once for Lampson and you’re done.”

Wow. Go Nick! Help him out here.

The One True Write-In Is Not Alone & ‘Show Me The Money’

August 30, 2006 by Vince Leibowitz · 1 Comment

The Republican Party (nationally) now has a great excuse to not give Shelley Sekula-Gibbs that promised $3 million dollars, which—let’s face it—only about five people in the entire state thought would materialize anyway.

It seems that former (perennial?) Congressional and U.S. Senate candidate (from the ‘93 free-for-all) Don Richardson didn’t ask the Secretary of State to remove him from the list of eligible write-in candidates.

Meanwhile, Shelley Sekula-Gibbs (the One True Write-In), having not evidently ever heard of Federal Express, traveled to Austin today to file her paperwork to run—if that’s what you want to call it.
