Having Some Fun At The Expense Of John McCain’s Acceptance Speech
September 4, 2008 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment
During the last few minutes of John McCain’s acceptance speech, I couldn’t help actually talking back to C-SPAN with some quick-witted retorts because, let’s face it, McCain just left himself open.
So, without further ado, here’s a little fun with McCain’s acceptance speech for you. The parts of his speech we’re making fun of are indented.
Texas Delegates To RNC Thanked For Pro-Business Climate, Told God Selected McCain, Palin

Every four years, when Texas Republicans pack their bags and head off to a GOP national convention, you can count on lots of interesting tidbits getting picked up by the media.
This week, the Texas Observer picked up on a couple of interesting tidbits.
The first, to no one’s surprise, relates to the religion. It seems as though whatever pastor (or, in the alternative, whatever lay Republican led Wednesday’s prayer) believes the Republican Party is a monarchy ruled by God. Why? Because that’s who the guy said selected the party’s nominees.
No, we’re not kidding. Via the Texas Observer blog:
Palin’s Address To The Republican National Convention
September 3, 2008 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment
The following is the address of GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) at tonight’s Republican National Convention.
Mr. Chairman, delegates, and fellow citizens: I am honored to be considered for the nomination for Vice President of the United States…
I accept the call to help our nominee for president to serve and defend America.
I accept the challenge of a tough fight in this election… against confident opponents … at a crucial hour for our country.
And I accept the privilege of serving with a man who has come through much harder missions … and met far graver challenges … and knows how tough fights are won - the next president of the United States, John S. McCain.
It was just a year ago when all the experts in Washington counted out our nominee because he refused to hedge his commitment to the security of the country he loves.
Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael L. Williams Addresses Republican National Convention

Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael L. Williams addressed the Republican National Convention tonight in Minneapolis. The following is the complete text of Williams’ speech.
My friends, as a Republican who has held statewide elected office in Texas for a decade, I am proud and deeply aware of the historic significance of this election.
But I am here with you in St. Paul, rather than being in Denver last week, because I believe values and ideas take precedence over the politics of demography and identity. And, because I know John
McCain is ready to lead.
Change is just a slogan when the ideas are as old as McGovern, Carter … and dare I say, here in St. Paul … Mondale, too. This election is a choice between a siren song of change without true demonstration, and an independent maverick with a real record of reform.

Texas Bush Bundler Fred Zeidman Hunts Jewish Cash, Support For McCain

Interestingly, one of the Texans in the news this year for helping presumptive GOP nominee John McCain raise a pot full of money isn’t Bob “Swiftboat” Perry (who is spending it on his son’s divorce).
It’s Fred Zeidman, a veteran money bundler for both President Bushes from Texas. National Journal has more:
John McCain’s Mother Was Born In Cleburne

How could we, collectors of all useless facts related to Texas, now have known this?
It has literally ruined our week to know that we were not aware of the fact that John McCain’s mother was born in Cleburne until now. We here at Capitol Annex have always taken great pride in the fact that we have a great storehouse of useless Texanna-type knowledge
Today, our great storehouse of useless knowledge has failed us like the safety on Dick Cheney’s gun the day Harry Whittington got shot.
Bush’s Final Convention Speech Could Have Been A Triumph For Texas…But, Alas…
September 3, 2008 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment
The final address of an incumbent president to his party’s national convention is supposed to be a moment of triumph–for the president and, indeed, for his home state.
For President George W. Bush and the state of Texas, however, his final GOP convention speech as a candidate or President was more of an anti-climax than a triumph–and that’s not just because it was televised from the White House instead of delivered in person as a result of the weather crisis on the Gulf Coast.
Even if Bush had given a full-blown speech touting his record while in office, it would have been an anti-climax. And, for Texas, it would have simply shown the spotlight on the fact that we actually elected Bush twice as our state’s chief executive.
Republicans Eager To Foist T Michael L. s’Williams Into National Spotlight At Convention
September 3, 2008 by Vince Leibowitz · Leave a Comment
I really, really, really, really have to wonder what attraction the Republicans at the national level have to Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael L. Williams this year. Is he wearing clothes made of money and handing out baby seal pâte to convention goers?
Seriously: out of all of the Republican governors, senators, congressmen, state legislators, judges, commissioners, mayors, and county coroners in American, why pick someone who is essentially a utility and oil industry regulator from Texas? He holds a position that isn’t sexy and, when introduced as the Railroad Commissioner, will make people wonder what the hell Texas is still doing with an entire state agency designed to regulate railroads.
Kay Granger Making The Rounds At Republican Convention, But You Won’t Believe Why
September 3, 2008 by Vince Leibowitz · 1 Comment
It should come as no surprise to any of us that U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger (R-Fort Worth) is making some serious rounds at the republican National Convention in Minneapolis. After all, she’s the Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference and was mentioned this year as a potential running mate for Arizona Senator John McCain.
The interesting thing about Granger’s activities this week, however, is that she isn’t just generally speaking about the ticket. As a former mayor, she’s clearly been roped in by the McCain team to specifically talk up how hard it is being a mayor to help bolster Governor Sarah Palin’s bona fides:
“I’m telling everybody that I’m tired of this dismissive attitude toward mayors,” the former Fort Worth mayor said, referring to comments about former Wasilla, Alaska, mayor Sarah Palin, now McCain’s choice for vice president.
“Believe me, a mayor is not ‘just a mayor.’ When you’re a mayor, you’re on call all the time. Your phone number is in the directory. You see everybody in the drugstore or the grocery store.”
Of course, there is a significant difference between being the mayor of Fort Worth Texas and being the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. How so? Well, let’s consider this: Wasilla city hall; Fort Worth City Hall.
Former Texas Senator Phil Gramm Won’t Shut Up

Evidently, Texas Senator Phil Gramm just doesn’t understand the fact that he needs to shut up.
