Presidio Levee Breaks: Republicans Could Have Helped, Did Nothing
September 19, 2008 by Vince Leibowitz · 1 Comment
The Associated Press is reporting that a levee protecting the West Texas town of Presidio, along the banks of the Rio Grande River, has broken, and that water is heading toward the populated areas of the city.
Capitol Annex first brought you this story on Wednesday, when the water had breached the levee and flooded a nearby golf course. The Governor has proclaimed a disaster in the area.
The poor condition of levees along the Rio Grande River is nothing new. In fact, it has been an issue since before Hurricane Katrina permanently added “levee breach” to the American lexicon. Following Hurricane Katrina, when a serious push was made to get federal money to help restore the levees along the Rio Grande, nearly every Republican in the state’s Congressional delegation voted against the measure:

Plane Carrying Seven Texas Congressmen Forced To Make Emergency Landing

Via CNN, we learn that a plane carrying seven members of Congress from Texas was forced to make an emergency landing today due to mechanical issues:
A Continental flight carrying seven Texas lawmakers made an emergency landing Tuesday, the FAA says.
The pilot of Continental Airlines Flight 458, a Boeing 737 en route to Washington from Houston, Texas, made a rapid descent into New Orleans, Louisiana, after the pilot reported pressurization problems, the FAA said.
The plane landed safely in New Orleans with no injuries, it said.
Among the passengers were former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul and six other Texas congressmen: Republicans Ted Poe and John Carter, and Democrats Nick Lampson, Henry Cuellar, Solomon P. Ortiz and Ciro Rodriguez, Lampson’s office told CNN.
The jet, which departed Houston at 2:20 p.m. (3:20 p.m. ET), landed in New Orleans at 3:15 p.m. (4:15 p.m. ET), said Continental spokeswoman
Needless to say, we’re glad each and every one of the Congressmen–and everyone else on board–are on the ground safe and sound.
