2007 Election: Smith County Jail Bond Fails For Second Time

As the Smith County Jail Bond for $125 million failed tonight 69 percent to 31 percent, County Judge Joel Baker has ruled out issuing certificates of obligation, which don’t require taxpayer approval, to fund a new jail. Smith County is presently housing inmates in counties across East Texas due to overcrowding.

It’s still early (only about 8 percent of all precincts statewide reporting), but all propositions seem to be flying toward approval.
Closest results are on Proposition 4, which is sitting at about 60/40.

In early voting, 68 percent, 4,244 voted against it and 32 percent, 1,969 voted for it.
